they sell their cars directly and not through a dealership &#8211; in <strong>Fremont<\/strong>, California.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, he had put up a US$1,000 deposit for the promised US$35,000 Model 3 unit that had just been taken off Tesla&#8217;s designers&#8217; drawing boards and put into production mode.<\/p>\n<p>The Tesla Model 3\u00a0 was supposed to catapult the fledgling company into the mainstream car market.<\/p>\n<p>All their previous models, including the <strong>Roadster<\/strong>, <strong>Model S<\/strong>, and <strong>Model X<\/strong> (an SUV), are relatively expensive, and only a few middle-income American consumers can\u00a0afford them.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla had been at the forefront in the rebirth of the <strong>all-electric<\/strong> vehicle boom that had seen the release of competing models from the big Japanese and European carmakers\u00a0 -notably <strong>Nissan<\/strong> (the &#8216;<strong>Leaf<\/strong>&#8216;) and <strong>BMW<\/strong> (the<strong> i3 &#8211; <\/strong>with the latest release, a 2-cylinder &#8216;range extender&#8217; engine is now just optional )- as well as from the top 2 American car firms &#8212; <strong>General Motors<\/strong> (the Chevy &#8216;<strong>Bolt<\/strong>&#8216;) and <strong>Ford<\/strong> (coming up with its &#8216;<strong>CUV<\/strong>&#8216;).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1607\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1607 size-large\" title=\"A US$57,000 car with only 'faux leather' seats and 'faux wood' dashboard???\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Tesla Model 3 interior - driver seat perspective\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior1.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Model 3&#8217;s simple interior and almost bare dashboard are both a boon and a bane.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As it turned out, Tesla&#8217;s promised consumer-friendly price tag of <strong>US$35,000<\/strong> for the Model 3 &#8216;base model&#8217; ballooned to almost <strong>US$57,000<\/strong> after the company failed in its promise to offer one with the &#8216;<strong>standard batteries<\/strong>&#8216; during the consumer rollout.<\/p>\n<p>Eager to drive home with his Model 3, Don was compelled to buy a more expensive unit with <em><strong>long-range<\/strong><\/em> (up to <strong>310 miles<\/strong>) <b><i>batteries <\/i><\/b>and<b><i> a premium exterior, <\/i><\/b>featuring\u00a0<strong>rear-wheel drive.\u00a0 <\/strong>His choice of color<b>, <i>a deep blue metallic<\/i><\/b> (an additional $1,500), and<b><i> alloy sports wheels <\/i><\/b>(an additional $1,500)<b><i> added $3,000 <\/i><\/b>to the cost, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">plus all taxes and fees<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The price would have gone even higher had he opted for one with an all-wheel drive (an extra $6,000 for the &#8216;<strong>basic<\/strong>&#8216; <em><strong>all-wheel drive<\/strong><\/em> and <em>an additional $15,000<\/em> for the &#8216;<strong><em>performance<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; <em><strong>all-wheel drive<\/strong><\/em>) &amp; <strong>enhanced<\/strong> <strong>Autopilot<\/strong> (an extra $5,000).<\/p>\n<p>After all the extras, a fully loaded, <em>top-of-the-line<\/em> Model 3 goes for about <strong>$75,500 before <\/strong>all the taxes and fees&#8211; <b>and that&#8217;s not a price for the average consumer.\u00a0 <\/b>For all that money, you could buy three (3)\u00a0 brand-new (latest model) <strong>Toyota Corollas<\/strong> and still have a few thousand left in your pocket.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1616\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1616\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1616 size-large\" title=\"Nice extra touch like the first Apple MacBooks - the Tesla logo glows while it charges!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Tesla_charge.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charging the car at home via a dedicated 240V outlet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, for the US$57K price, he shelled out &#8211; before federal and state tax incentives &#8211; Don&#8217;s Model 3 car should, at least, be impressive.\u00a0 It is, <strong>but not without some drawbacks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most electric cars have impressive torque, and the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.1 seconds.\u00a0 The car&#8217;s handling was exceptional as the 19&#8243; wheels were big enough to mitigate some road imperfections.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t say enough praise for all the tech goodies inside and outside the car, including its array of radars, sensors, cameras, and software updates for the touchscreen control panel, as well as the imposing <strong>all-glass roof<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0All of the Model 3&#8217;s glass parts, including the windows, were manufactured by <strong>Saint-Gobain Sekurit<\/strong>, which traces its roots back to 1665 in France as the <strong>Royal Glass Works<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1606\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1606\" title=\"Manufactured by Saint-Gobain Sekurit --same ones found in luxury sedans and mostly European sports cars.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior2.jpg 1008w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior2-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Model 3&#8217;s all-glass, UV-protective roof is imposing. Those two micro-LED pin lights provide just enough illumination for the passengers at the back.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And, as this is an all-electric vehicle, you tend to rely less on the brakes to slow down the car &#8212;release your foot on the accelerator, and you accomplish two things: 1) Slows the vehicle down to a halt, and 2).\u00a0 You charge the batteries (<em><strong>regenerative braking<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s get to the things that I didn&#8217;t like about the Tesla Model 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Firstly<\/strong>, the door handles.\u00a0 Opening a door is a <strong>two-handed affair<\/strong>.\u00a0 What???\u00a0 You have to push the recessed handle with one hand and grab the handle&#8217;s end once it pops out with your other hand \u2014 yes, to open a door.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1612\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1612 size-large\" title=\"Recessed door handles give a streamlined look but require 2 hands to operate---unless you're nimble enough!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_door.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">If you&#8217;re quick, you can open the doors of a Tesla Model 3 with one hand.\u00a0 For most others, opening a door is a two-handed affair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Second<\/strong>, there is <strong>no manual override to open the glove box compartment<\/strong>.\u00a0 To open it, you must turn on the touchscreen tablet (which acts as the sole instrument panel and controls everything inside the car) and push the &#8216;<strong>open glove box<\/strong>&#8216; button.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Too cool but also too dumb<\/span>.\u00a0 Any determined thief can use a screwdriver and force it open.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third<\/strong>, and as mentioned above, the car relied too much on the <strong>15&#8243; touchscreen tablet<\/strong> in the dashboard&#8217;s center.\u00a0 I honestly believe that Tesla did it to cut costs in the guise of the &#8216;cool&#8217; factor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1613\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1613 size-large\" title=\"Truly functional\/stroke of genius or just for the 'cool factor'???\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Truly functional or just for the 'cool factor'???\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tesla_interior3.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This 15&#8243; touchscreen tablet is the only instrument panel inside the Tesla Model 3.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is especially distracting when driving around the city, as you have to deal with all the car&#8217;s functionalities on a touchscreen panel.\u00a0 As if texting while driving is just not bad enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth<\/strong>, for the steep price tag on any premium variants of the Tesla Model 3, <strong><em>real leather<\/em> seats should be standard<\/strong>.\u00a0 As it is, the &#8216;premium interior&#8217; model could only boast of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">faux leather<\/span> in black.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lastly<\/strong>, except for topping off the windshield washer fluid, <strong>there&#8217;s nothing a Tesla Model 3 owner who&#8217;s keen on maintaining the car himself can do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the other end-user replaceable parts &amp; fluids are either hidden underneath the car&#8217;s chassis, <em><strong>where the engine sits in your typical internal combustion vehicle, or are now in the front luggage compartment<\/strong><\/em>, or are not easily accessible.<\/p>\n<p>This means that if ever the car needs even the simplest maintenance, you may have to take it back to a Tesla dealership\u2014bottom\u00a0line:<strong> costlier upkeep.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other minor flaws need no mentioning and can be ignored, but the ones above are too obvious to be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>After all, Tesla&#8217;s mass-production model cars\u2014 starting with the 2012 Model S \u2014had only been around for a few years.\u00a0 Improvements are expected to be introduced in the subsequent iterations of those models.<\/p>\n<p>That is, if they &#8211;
