{"id":1346,"date":"2017-09-07T18:55:02","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T18:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/?p=1346"},"modified":"2025-09-13T19:27:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T03:27:31","slug":"sony-dash-resurrected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/2017\/09\/07\/sony-dash-resurrected\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony Dash Resurrected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometime in May of this year, my six years old (purchased in January 2011) <strong>Sony Dash <\/strong>Personal Internet Viewer\u00a0<strong> (HID-C10<\/strong>) received a control panel\u00a0update\u00a0to inform me that service for the device would end in July.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0last firmware update (from version <strong>1.7.1461 to 1.7.1526<\/strong>) was done on April 08, 2016, after the device had issues &#8220;<strong><em>downloading the main control panel<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0and rendered it useless.<\/p>\n<p>Over the 6+ years that I had owned the unit, there were intermittent issues with Sony&#8217;s backend\u00a0servers that\u00a0kept it inactive. But, Sony was always\u00a0able to come up with firmware updates to keep the service going &#8212; until July of this year.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone zemanta-img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured\" title=\"Sony Dash\" src=\"\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e6\/Sony_Dash_CES.jpg\/670px-Sony_Dash_CES.jpg\" alt=\"Sony Dash\" width=\"670\" height=\"503\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sony Dash (Photo credit: Wikipedia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Sony Dash is a small tabletop alarm clock-radio-weather\/gadget with a 7&#8243; touchscreen that sold for $199 when initially released in April 2010.\u00a0 Its functionality relied 100% on the Internet, hence,\u00a0WiFi (a\/g) is built-in.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the beautiful design, the main attraction of the gadget, just like a smartphone, is its capability to load additional &#8220;widgets&#8221; (or, apps) via its built-in memory.\u00a0 It enabled owners to stream videos and music from content providers like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, Pandora, Slacker, Sony Music, etc.\u00a0 There are also thousands of other useful widgets that range from the arts to zoology.<\/p>\n<p>And so, one day in July this year, I saw the dreaded firmware update &#8211; <strong>1.7.1604<\/strong>&#8211; that would turn\u00a0an otherwise very useful device into a door stopper.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1364\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1364 size-large\" title=\"Just how expensive it is for a big company like Sony to maintain servers for their products like the Dash???\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-scaled-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyDash1-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don&#8217;t hit the OK button!!! The dreaded Dash firmware update -1.7.1604- would stop all functionality of the unit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, I did not do the firmware update but, instead, called Sony&#8217;s customer service (<strong>in the U.S., it&#8217;s: 1-800-222-7669<\/strong>) to ask them what to do with\u00a0a useless\u00a0unit.<\/p>\n<p>To the company&#8217;s credit, it promptly replaced\u00a0a product that had reached its <em><strong>&#8216;end-of-life&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em>(aka, <strong><em>planned obsolescence<\/em><\/strong>), with a choice of\u00a0either an\u00a0<strong>alarm clock\/AM-FM radio<\/strong> <strong>(ICF-C1)<\/strong> or a <strong>Bluetooth speaker (XB10) <\/strong>after I\u00a0e-mailed the image\u00a0of the\u00a0unit&#8217;s serial number.<\/p>\n<p>When the replacement ICF-C1 clock radio arrived a week later via <strong>FedEx<\/strong>\u00a0(shipping also paid\u00a0by Sony), I\u00a0grabbed the Dash that sat atop one of my stereo speakers &#8211; still with the <strong>&#8216;Update available&#8217;<\/strong> screen- and yanked out its power supply.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1367\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1367 size-large\" title=\"Sony officially ended support for the Dash on July 2017 by deploying firmware 1.7.1604 that rendered it non-functional.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SonyICFC1.jpg 1288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sony sent this free ICF-C1 clock-AM-FM radio (or, the XB-10 Bluetooth speaker) as a way of recompensing owners of bricked Dash units<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, somewhere in the coastal city of San Diego, California, a guy had been very busy writing code to port the Dash (running firmware 1.7.1526) to\u00a0make it work with <strong>Chumby.com&#8217;s<\/strong> server(s) after Sony&#8217;s May software\u00a0update alert.<\/p>\n<p>Chumby (now, operated by <strong>Blue Octy, LLC<\/strong>) is a small company behind a line of very affordable &#8220;Internet viewers&#8221; similar to the Dash. The Dash runs on an OS modified from the Chumby OS.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in early August, Blue Octy released the software\u00a0patch (<strong><em>but only for the <\/em>Dash HID-C10<em> model<\/em><\/strong>) that resurrected\u00a0some Dash units.\u00a0 The patch is <a href=\"http:\/\/files.chumby.com\/dash\/chumby\/chumby-hidc10-1.0.0.zip\">Chumby-HIDC10-1.0.0.zip<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u00a0could also be downloaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/technology\/downloads\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you have an HID-C10 Sony Dash, just ensure that your unit is running firmware 1.7.1526.\u00a0 If you had accidentally installed firmware 1.7.1604 and bricked the unit, simply revert to firmware 1.7.1526 via the instructions <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.chumby.com\/viewtopic.php?id=9752\">here<\/a>\u00a0before applying the patch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1368\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1368 size-large\" title=\"You will need USB stick (at least, 256 KB) to install the Chumby patch on your Sony Dash (model HID-C10 only).\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash.jpg 1288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All set to install the patch to the Sony Dash (for model HID-C10 only) to enable it to run off Chumby.com&#8217;s server<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you applied the patch correctly, you should have restored some usefulness to your Dash such as the clock, weather, and a few radio stations. \u00a0A $3 monthly subscription fee would enable one to get numerous apps as well as multiple channels on this gadget that &#8212; simply, refuses to go away.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1369\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1369 size-large\" title=\"Notice that the glowing &quot;Sony&quot; logo was remove ---justifiably &amp; technically, it's a no longer a Sony. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.marcoscarpio.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/ChumbyDash2.jpg 1288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sony Dash is back in business with a new Blue Octy channel\/control panel interface!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometime in May of this year, my six years old (purchased in January 2011) Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer\u00a0 (HID-C10) received a control panel\u00a0update\u00a0to inform me that service for the device would end in July.
